In the 14th Century, The Maoris, a Polynesian group from the
eastern Pacific reached New Zealand. Dutch navigator Abel
Janszoon Tasman was the first European to site New Zealand and
from 1769 to 1770 British Capt. James Cook explored the coastal
areas. In 1840 British sovereignty was declared and a
representative Parliament was established in 1853. In 1870 wars
with the Maori's ended and in 1907 the colony became a dominion.
New Zealand fought with the allies in both world wars and in 1951
signed the ANZUS (Australia, New Zealand and United States)
Treaty of Mutual Security. In 1985, New Zealand refused to
permit U.S. Navy ships carrying nuclear weapons to enter their
waters. New Zealand has joined Britain in a pact to defend
Singapore and Malaysia, where New Zealand troops are stationed.
